It took me a bit to figure this out, partly due to the fact of no really good explanation of it. So, I'm going to have a crack at it. Basically, I wanted to understand how keyboard matrices work.
When you finish this tutorial you will be able to be able to modify a split keybrd sketch with 10 to 24 keys on the shift registers. The breadboard in the following picture models a split keyboard.
