Could HD or HM be one of Mom and Dad's offspring? Mom and Dad's oldest eaglet turned 14 years old this spring. Since bald eagles tend to nest in the region they were born, it's possible that at least one of them was produced by Dad and OM, or Dad and Mom. But male and female eagles have slightly different nesting dispersal patterns, which makes male HD the more likely offspring choice. Natal dispersal in birds is defined as the movement between hatching location and first breeding or potential b

Uh-oh...he sees us! The arrival of winter weather has sent the last migrants south by the hundreds. Our Golden Eagles are back on their Driftless wintering grounds and Bald Eagles are pouring through the Flyway, gathering in large multi-age groups as they go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FN0kzFRJK2U. The Diction-aerie lists 'convocation' for 'a group of eagles', but watchers have also suggested quarrel, rabbler (as in rabble), congress, recess, carnival, rave, gawk, confusion, scrum, and frat

DN18 fledged today at 11:50AM. The eaglet appeared strong and confident as it looked all around, gathered its strength, spread its wings, and winged its way into the great wide world! Watch the video at about 50 seconds and you'll see DN18 fly off across the pasture, where it was joined by Mr. North on T4. Will DN17 fledge tomorrow? Stay tuned! Mr. North with DN18 on T4: https://youtu.be/lXOQ8ryk-pA?si=rAdIdQ9zU-6DC72S DN18 returns! https://youtu.be/fvJc7-vTj14?si=aHQJwDo1yi2NFqc1 | Raptor Resou

DN17 and DN18 turned three and two days old today! The eaglets aren't ready wander the nest just yet, but it was fun to see them popping their little periscopes up from beneath DNF and Mr. North's feathery coverlets. Did the dynamic duo get enough to eat? Our camera operators recorded seventeen feedings from DNF and five from Mr. North. DN17 ate 14 times and DN18 ate 12. I'm surprised they could left their heads for more food by the end of the day! Our Facebook video shows a relatively peaceful

Welcome to the world, FSV52 and 53! Fifty-three eaglets: what a milestone! Ma FSV laid four eggs this year: a real surprise to us, since she most likely began nesting here in 2007 and has been a three-egg layer for years. She is a 2002 hatch from a nest roughly 45 miles east of FSV, while Pa was captured and banded as an adult by a wildlife biologist working with the Denver International Airport. The Decorah Eagle nest became more famous, but Xcel Energy's Fort St. Vrain nest was our first. Bob

DNF didn't lay an egg today, although she and Mr. North kept busy with nursery prep: bringing in plenty of new nesting material, scraping and loosening the substrate to keep it soft and fluffy, and raising the rails to keep eaglets in and wind out. They are spending the night just one tree north of the nest tree - not on the nest, but not very far away from it! We're crossing our talons for an egg tomorrow afternoon and we'll get everyone caught up on NestFlix tomorrow morning! In the meantime,

Where have the Decorah Eagles been? We have an update for you after several weeks of observation in the vicinity of N2B and a relatively new eagle nest within what we would describe as their territory. We will start by clarifying that we are not disclosing the location of this nest at the request of the property owner. The new nest is within the typical bald eagle territorial area of up to 6 square miles. Unfortunately, it is not within view of any cameras we have near the fish hatchery. Are the

What's going on at the Trempealeau eagle nest? Mr. T hasn't been seen since March 28. Prior to that, he and Mrs. T were exchanging incubation duties and he was acting like a normal eagle Dad. But we haven't seen him on the nest since his last shift and no one has reported or found him, live or dead, in the vicinity of the nest. The couple's first eaglet hatched on very late on April 2nd or very early on April 3rd and Mrs. T has been handling brooding and feeding remarkably well. We're monitoring

It looks like eagles at all of our nests have started nestorations! DNF, Mr. North, and Mr. and Mrs. T are visiting Nest Depot, flying in sticks, inspecting one another's work, and tangoing away to put everything in the perfect place. While HM and HD don't appear inclined to come back to N1 or to adopt N2B, we have seen them fishing the pond and carrying sticks to the east. We'll go scouting for their latest nest and for Mom and DM2 once more leaves are down. I enjoyed all of these videos but wa

If - like me! - you spent much of today imploring HM and HD to feed their eaglet, you'll be happy to know that HM fed DH2 three times today so far! It was wonderful to watch her go from: - Dropping a whole fish on a hatchling. - Carving up the fish but eating the bites herself. - Trying to put fish tidbits into DH2's mouth, but mostly missing. - Successfully feeding DH2! Our camera operators reported a nice poop shoot at around 4:04 PM today: an excellent sign that DH2 is healthy and doing well!

This video shows DN13 (left) and DN14 (right). DN13 fledged on June 11, at 78 days of age. When will DN14 fledge? DN14 turned 82 days old today, which prompted us to look at previous fledges! I've included sex where verified by measurements. While males fledge earlier than females on average (Brett's study found that males averaged 77 days and females averaged 78 days) some males fledge late, as you'll see below. Is DN14 the latest eaglet to fledge? Not yet! That honor belongs to DN1, a lone eag

Building material or office fidget? Every great nest begins with a single stick and not just any twig will do: as watchers know, eagles are real stick-lers for quality. After some eagle side-eye, Mrs. T steps in to lend a beak to Mr. T, who is struggling with a stick that won't go just where he wants it. But her assistance isn't welcome and, after a brief Beakerson's moment, she hop flaps up to a favorite perch, leaving Mr. T to figure it out. A place for every stick and every stick in its place

'You want that stick WHERE'? I love the seeming eagle side-eye from Mr. North. Every great nest begins with a single stick and not just any twig will do: as watchers know, Mr. North and DNF are real stick-lers for quality, even when they're hauling in sticks by the bundle. If the Norths had word art hanging in their nest, it might say "A place for every stick and every stick in its place!" Does the North Nest late fall nestoration rush predict a hard winter? No. Birds are good short-term forecas

Put up your feet and take a deep breath...it's time for NestFlix! Today's Diction-aerie word is 'eggnant': a female eagle's condition immediately prior to laying eggs. Our eagle Moms are shifting fat to their brood patches and retaining water as their egg follicles swell and mature. We're planning to begin egg watch on Friday, but we'll also be watching for DNF, Mrs. T, and Ma FSV to begin loafing around the nest and 'practice' laying as eggs draw nearer! As always, thanks to our camera operator

Memory Lane Moment #3 comes from me! There was a lot to love at the North nest this year. The Norths have a strong bond, their valley is beautiful, and DN15 and DN16 were wonderful from hatch to fledge! The North nest felt like a tiny slice of paradise in the rolling hills of NE Iowa: a place to relax and dream under blue skies, rippling water, and lush greenery. DN15 completed hatch sometime in the late evening of March 25 or the wee hours of March 26th. I loved seeing DN15 feed while DN16's li

April 14, 2021: Mr. North saves the day! Despite their bulging crops, eaglets DN13 and DN14 are always hungry! DN13 finds a bone and tries to eat it, leading to a tug-o-war. DN14 wins, but begins to choke on the bone. Mr. North removes it - first from his eaglet's mouth and then from the nest. While eagles don't use human expressions, I think many viewers will recognize the look on Mr. North's face just before he flies away with the bone! https://youtu.be/MNTIqCsiCfQ | Raptor Resource Project

Nestorations and sticky shenanigans are in full swing at all of our nests, but Nest Depot must have had a two-for-one sale on the morning of November 10! DNF and Mr. North brought in ten sticks between 6:41 and 7:45 AM, including several wonky sticks. Wonky sticks are a pain in the tail, but – as we see here – they lock the nest together and help keep it from sliding by catching on everything, including the Norths! | Raptor Resource Project

I was putting together a serious post on eaglet development when our volunteers pointed out this poop shoot! DN17 began its artistic career with an excellent poopshoot yesterday! Eaglets shoot poop - instinctively? reflexively? - out of the nest bowl, but hatchlings lack the coordination or mass to really let it fly! As silly as it sounds, the ability to shoot poop out of, or almost out of, the nest marks an important developmental milestone. The little poopcassos are bigger, more coordinated, a

We've got your mega-movie raptor roll and some feeding observations! Still worried about DH2? As of yesterday, the little peaglet had been fed an incredible 84 times.
