The demons originated from the Bed of Chaos and the Chaos Flame. After the Bed of Chaos was destroyed in Dark Souls, the flame later came back as the Old Chaos beneath Eleum Loyce. The Burnt Ivory King and later Alsanna sacrificed everything to keep it contained by sealing it beneath, and freezing Eleum Loyce to stop it from spreading.
