A deep huff of air, a warning carried on breath, not sound. Wolves can bark, but it’s rare. In the wild, giving away your location to rival packs is risky, so that quiet warning puff evolved as the safer choice. But when dogs became domesticated, humans wanted loud watch dogs to guard camps. So we selectively bred barking into them
